Malini Chakravarty is Thematic Lead for Research on Tax Equity at Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA). Malini has worked extensively on issues of domestic taxation and their inequalising impact, such as that of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) introduced in India in 2017. She has also been working on other issues of taxation, such as tax incentives for philanthropic giving in select countries; problems related to Centre-State sharing of fiscal resources; certain aspects of international taxation, etc. She has contributed significantly to CBGA’s analysis of the Government of India’s stimulus package in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and led CBGA’s analysis of implications of the financial package on the livelihoods of Dalits, Adivasis and women.
Malini has more than 20 years of research experience. Prior to joining CBGA, she has worked as a researcher in economics at various organisations. She has also taught economics in post-graduate programme at reputed management institutes. Malini has a wide range of research interest and experience including in macroeconomics, fiscal policy, tax justice, international trade and social protection. Malini has done her M.A. in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University and M.Phil in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
